Ryan had a pet cat. His name was Max. Max was small, black, and very smart. Ryan loved Max a lot. They played together every day after school. One night, Ryan saw Max jump on the window. Max looked at the moon and meowed. Then something strange happened. Max began to talk! “Ryan,” Max said, “I can talk, but only at night.” Ryan was shocked. “You can talk?” “Yes,” Max said. “I’m a magic cat. But it’s a secret.” Ryan smiled. “Wow! That’s so cool!” Every night, Ryan and Max talked. Max told funny stories. He talked about mice, birds, and his cat dreams. Ryan never felt lonely again. He had a best friend—and a magical one too. But Ryan kept the secret. Because some things are better when only you and your pet know.
